A number of European countries are experiencing unprecedented high temperatures
Here are a few reminders to take into account if you are having challenges while traveling there.
-
- Many locations in Europe are NOT air conditioned because they don’t typically get extremely hot weather in most areas. This includes many hotels. Air conditioning is just not the norm as it is in the USA.
-
- Their air conditioning in general is not as strong as what we find in the USA.
-
- If you feel your room is too hot, you should check with the front desk to see if the air conditioning is working properly in your room, and/or if they can provide you with a portable fan.
-
- It’s most likely not an issue with you specific hotel – so moving to another hotel will not necessarily solve the problem
Europe is at the height of its busy tourist season and switching hotels will likely incur significant additional costs and won’t necessarily ensure you get cooler accommodations.
Recommended ways that you can keep cooler include:
-
- Avoid the mid-day heat by using that time to visit museums and other large indoor venues that may be more likely to be air-conditioned. Or follow the habits of many locals who will nap or “siesta” in the afternoon and dine later in the evening when things are cooler.
- Look for outdoor shaded venues when stopping into restaurants and cafes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
- Drink plenty of liquids and eat lighter foods
- Take cool showers to lower body heat
- Find a nearby water activity such as a beach, lake, or pool. The hotel front desk can help point them in the right direction
- Enjoy the various local ice cream variations that are so delightful in Europe.
